Apollo’s Matthew Heaney took an excellent Gold medal away from the Ulster TT champs at Woodgreen on Sunday. His time of 21:49 on a blustery day seen him lift gold by roughly 20 secs in the Junior category, with his time also being good enough to see him into the tenth in the senior category as well.

Many congrats to Matt from all of the team!

Hi Dudes,

Despite the arctic weather, today was a great day out at the Dromara cycling clubs trailquest. Paul and myself (The Pukes of Hazard) registered online and were out of the starting blokes at 10.56 with map and coordinates. Being the usual well prepared duo we didn’t have a map board to put the map and coordinates on so we just pinned them to our jerseys. Not ideal but better than cycling with one had on the bar and the other holding up the map to check where we had to go to.

We took in some checkpoints well out from the start close to Kingsway before heading across the M1 again to get to Mary Peters where there were some easy pickings. The trails were slippery and we had to try to catch the grass on the verge to avoid a fall. Even the trails through the forest areas were frozen solid and were very treacherous. We got round without any falls with a good selection of checkpoints on our sheet.

No prizes but we had a taxing and fun three hours plus workout. There is a trailquest almost ever week until mid January with one on our own trails at the lakes. With the weather as it is and road work not possible or safe, this is a great way to keep the wheels turning. Much better than a boring turbo. Anybody up for them over the next number of weeks should post their interest on the site so we can get more yellow jerseys on the start line.

Billy Stewart Memorial

Derrymacash resembled the South of France at the beginning of the Apollo promoted Billy Stewart Cup as riders put on the suncream on what was one of the hottest days of the year. In total 58 riders signed on for the 7 lap event with the A4 riders receiving a 7 minute handicap. It was soon evident that this would not be enough as the limit group had clawed back almost 2 minutes after only 10 miles of racing. The 16 hardy souls pushed on regardless and held out until the 4th lap when they were hauled back in and the race all came together, however the status quo was not to remain like this for long with a strong Newry team constantly on the attack, the constant pressure soon paid off.

With 2 laps remaining 7 riders  Stephen McAllister (Ballymoney), Darren Weir (Dromara cc), John Paul Connelly (Omagh), Desi Foley, Nathan Morgan (Newry), John Madden (Curran Racing) and Kyle Houston (Phoenix) slipped of the front of the bunch. At the start of the final lap the break had 1 minute and did not look like being caugh and the race stayed like this until the end. Nathan Morgan took up the sprint with about 1km to go and was quickly follwowed by Stephen McAllister, these two drew away from their break companions with McAllister proving strongest at the line, John Madden led the other over the line followed by Darren Weir, John Paul Connelly Desi Foley and Kyle Houston. Kyle houston took the 3rd cat prize with Conor Judge of the promoting club Apollo the best 4th cat rider.

The event was also part of the Cycli sport Weefoot trophy and the results for this were 1st Nathan McAleer 2nd Matthew Brennan 3rd Pauric McCafferty 4th Nathan Myer 5th Darren Finnigan. Apollo would like to thank all those who took part in the race and all the background team who made it possible on the day.

Here’s some pictures by Derek King from the Lakeland 2-Day race. Unfortunately I’ve had no race report or results, but it’s good to see the guys turning up for these events, although I’m sure there’s an imposter in one of those pics :)

Ballymoney 2-day

From Left to right are Marty Rogers, Campbell Armstrong, Tony Hare, Enda McDaid & Davy Quinn

A full five man squad of Apollo riders took part in last weekends Loughguile 2 day cycle race promoted by Ballymoney cycling club. The format of the race was a circuit race on the Saturday morning followed by a 5km time trial in the evening, Sunday was to be a tough Mountainous loop in the Glens of Antrim.

The teams main objectives where to get selected GC rider and Team captain Tony Hare as high up the classification as possible with a secondary objective of placing well in the team competition.

With 8 riders in the starting line up Ballymoney was always going to be the team to beat and sure enough attacks started going of the front of the bunch from the start but with so many fresh legs in the peleton everything came back for a bunch sprint at the end where Tony Hare with great support from Campbell Armstrong and Davy Quinn managed to bag 5th place. With the whole bunch on the same time the evening Time trial was going to be vital and the teams decision not to bring specialised time trial bikes proved a costly one with Tony putting in the best time of the team but crucially losing almost 30 seconds to Stevie Baines of Audi East Antim who had chosen to bring his TT bike to the event. Tony still secured a good position in the GC.

The final stage on Sunday Began with 3 flatish circuits followed by a longer mountainous loop so the team plan was to get Marty Rogers and Enda McDaid ,two strong riders on the flat to push the pace on at the start and soften the bunch up for Tony’s assault on the Yellow Jearsey. On Lap two Marty Rogers rolled through at the front of the bunch followed by Tony and Adrian Finnegan of Banbridge cycling club a strong rider well known to local cyclists. Marty saw the opportunityand slowed up letting the pair slip of the front of the bunch, the rest of the team spotted the move immediately and along with Liam McKivergan the Banbridge team mate of Adrian move to the front of the bunch to disrupt any chase only allowing two other riders to move across to strengthen the break.

The Yellow Jearsey became increasingly worried about Tony in the break and began to chase bringing the race all back together at the start of the mountainous section of the race, at this point the strong men moved to the front and despite his efforts in the break Tony was able to go with them and again finished as teams best place rider and secure a top 15 place overall. The rest of the team all finished battered and bruised but well enough to see them in second place in the team competition, all in all a very successfull weekend.

Ballymoney cycling club are to be congratulated on running this inaugural event and it will definitely be an event Apollo will put in the calendar for next year.
