Lurgan’s Apollo Cycling Club held the first reliability trial of the year starting at the Goodyear Social Club on Sunday. For the uninitiated a reliability trial is a pre-season cycling event typically, but not exclusively, for competitive cyclists. It is essentially a leisure run but is usually at a decent pace. It gives an opportunity to test the fitness levels, check out the new gear (if Santa came calling) and just work off a few of those extra pounds gained over the close season.

For the first trial of the year in Mid-January conditions were almost perfect and the event attracted ninety-five cyclists from various Ulster Cycling Clubs. The cyclists with motorcycle outriders were led out by a pace car for thirty miles, with the pace increasing for the return on the sixty-eight mile jaunt. With an average of over 21mph the leading bunch returned in around three hours.

Back at the Goodyear Apollo Cycling Club members had put on a spread for all the participants and energy levels were well replenished.

Well done to organiser Andy McGibbon and to everyone who contributed to the success of the trial. Goodyear Social Club is an ideal venue to host such an event, being just outside the town and having both parking and changing facilities. Thanks go to the committee and staff of Goodyear Social Club for their assistance to Apollo.

Apollo Cycling Club is based in Lurgan and their members include both leisure and competitive cyclists. There are club runs each Saturday and Sunday morning and details are on their website. New members are always welcome. Why not check them out on www.apolloct.com or on Facebook.

The annual Apollo CT Reliability Trial will start this Sunday 15th Jan. It’s the usual curtain opener for the reliability season, with it being the first chance to test your legs for the up coming season!

It starts from the Goodyear Social Club [Silverwood Road, Lurgan, BT66 6NA] @ 0930, with sign on open 0815. There’s a £5 fee and riders must have a C.I. license.

The route is 68 miles and the pace will be restricted for the first half of event. Riders will be encouraged to keep 50 yards off the lead car for safety reasons.

Congratulations to Fred McSorley after his top ten placing (9 to be exact…) at the Irish National CX championships in Dublin on Saturday 7th Jan. The race overall looked to be of the highest calibre in years and fantastically well attended so big well done to Fred! The race itself also receiving some well earned national press coverage.

Special congrats have to go to Robin Seymour who at 40 years lifted his 18th national title, amazing, theres hope for us all yet. With Banbridge CC pair Roger Aiken and Matthew Adair filling up the podium giving us Ulster boys some silverware too.

To read about it & look at the pics head over to Irish cycling.

Once again, well done Fred!

Apollo’s Matthew Heaney took an excellent Gold medal away from the Ulster TT champs at Woodgreen on Sunday. His time of 21:49 on a blustery day seen him lift gold by roughly 20 secs in the Junior category, with his time also being good enough to see him into the tenth in the senior category as well.

Many congrats to Matt from all of the team!
